Detachable badges in metal or cloth are a key element of military uniforms. They can identify the rank of the serviceman, their particular regiment or ship, qualification or specialist trade, and distinguish those with gallantry awards, long service or who have been previously wounded. Servicemen may also wear badges of larger formations such as Brigades, Divisions or Armies , within which their unit is currently serving.
It follows that badges on military uniforms change throughout military service, and can help identify and date portrait photographs.

As part of armour[ edit ] Gorget in a full suit of armour In the High Middle Ages, when mail was the primary form of metal body armor used in Western Europe, the Mail coif protected the neck and lower face. During the 14th century as more plate armor appeared to supplement mail, the Bascinet helmet incorporated a mail curtain called the Aventail which protected the lower face, neck and shoulders.
A separate mail collar called a “pisan” or “standard” was sometimes worn under the aventail as additional protection. Through the early 15th century, gorget plates were integrated into the helmet itself to form the great bascinet. Other forms of helmet such as the sallet which did not protect the lower face and throat with plate were paired with a separate bevor , and the armet was often fitted with a wrapper that included gorget lames protecting the throat. During this time, the mail standard was still used.
At the beginning of the 16th century, the gorget became fully developed as a component of plate armor in its own right. Unlike previous gorget plates and bevors which sat over the breastplate and required a separate mail collar to fully protect the neck from gaps, the developed gorget was worn under the back and breastplate and was intended to cover a larger area of the neck, nape, shoulders, and upper chest, since the upper edges of the cuirass had become lower than before. The gorget served as an anchor point for the pauldrons , which either had holes to slide over pins projecting from the gorget, or fastened to the gorget by straps and buckles.
The neck was protected by a high collar of articulated lames, and the overall gorget consisted of front and back pieces which were hinged at the side so it could be put on and taken off. Some helmets had additional neck lames which overlapped the gorget, while others fitted tightly to the top of the gorget so that there would be no gap between them.

The uniforms of the Yeoman of the Guard formed and the Yeomen Warders also formed have traditionally been in Tudor red and gold. Red coats with Williamite forces during the Williamite War in Ireland. The Irish referred to soldiers of the Lord Lieutenant of Ireland as red coats as early as That the term redcoat was brought to Europe and elsewhere by Irish emigrants is evidenced by Philip O’Sullivan Beare , one of the many thousands of fugitives from Tudor and early Stuart Ireland, who mentions the ‘Battle of the Redcoats’ event in his history of the Tudor conquest, written in Latin in Spain.
He wrote of it as “that famous victory which is called ‘of the red coats’ [illam victoriam quae dicitur ‘sagorum rubrorum’] because among others who fell in battle were four hundred soldiers lately brought from England and clad in the red livery of the viceroy”. One concerns an engagement, twenty years later in , during the Second Desmond Rebellion , in which he says “a company of English soldiers, distinguished by their dress and arms, who were called “red coats” [Vestibus et armis insignis erat cohors Anglorum quae"Sagorum rubrorem” nominabantur], and being sent to war [i[in Ireland]y the Queen were overwhelmed near Lismore by John Fitzedmund Fitzgerald , the seneschal”.
In the Lords and Council informed the Sheriffs and Justices of Lancashire who were charged with raising foot for service in Ireland that they should be furnished with “a cassocke of some motley, sad grene coller, or russett”. Again, in the summer of , the Lord Deputy William Russell, 1st Baron Russell of Thornhaugh writing to William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley about the relief of Enniskillen , mentions that the Irish rebel Hugh O’Neill, Earl of Tyrone had ” shot in red coats like English soldiers” — the inference being that English soldiers in Ireland were distinguished by their red uniforms.
The Red Coat has evolved from being the British infantryman’s normally worn uniform to a garment retained only for ceremonial purposes.

The letter was signed by a person claiming to be a retired two star Army General. I wonder if this General knew he had violated the regulations by signing this letter? I receive a lot of questions about what military members are allowed and not allowed to do when it comes to politics. Federal Law Titles 10, 2, and 18, United States Code , Department of Defense DOD Directives, and specific military regulations strictly specify a military active duty person’s participation in partisan political activities.
DOD defines “partisan political activity” as ” activity supporting or relating to candidates representing, or issues specifically identified with, national or State political parties and associated or ancillary organizations. Issues relating to constitutional amendments, referendums, approval of municipal ordinances, and others of similar character are not considered as specifically being identified with national or State political parties.
