Its first episode aired in as an experimental broadcast. Over the course of the s, as television began to pervade the popular culture, game shows quickly became a fixture. Daytime game shows would be played for lower stakes to target stay-at-home housewives. Higher-stakes programs would air in primetime. However, the rise of quiz shows proved to be short-lived. In , many of the higher stakes game shows were discovered to be rigged and ratings declines led to most of the primetime games being canceled. An early variant of the game show, the panel game , survived the quiz show scandals.
Continue I met up with a friend one Saturday afternoon at a bar for a football game. Soon after arriving I met J. He was cute, charming, and we seriously hit it off right away.

It was a murder mystery on the moon. I can never turn down a good, realistic sci-fi PLUS murder mystery. It has it all! It was placed in and their second-in-command had died. Everyone thought he had gone crazy, but Dashiel Givson suspected differently. The first book is almost mirrored in the second —the base commander this time disappears.

I feel like middle school is one of those key times in life where many students either take the path to become a life-long reader…or not. I pulled books that I frequently recommend from 7 different genres and put them in boxes at each of my 7 tables. It exposes readers to new genres that they may not seek out on their own. I set a timer like the one projected on the screen for five minutes.
For the first 30 seconds, they can peruse the books in the box at their table and select a book. Then, they spend 4 minutes reading the book to see if it hooks them. With 30 seconds remaining, they make note of the title of the book and give it a ranking. If at any time they find a book they want to check out, they can hold on to that book. All other books go back in the box, we rotate the boxes, and repeat this activity times. I always get great feedback from teachers and students with this activity…they love it!
By the final round, about half of the students will typically have a book that they want to check out. I did this several weeks ago with my 8th graders, and this week the 6th graders are having their turn. Do you do something similar to this? What other tried and true activities do you use for the love of reading?

In middle school, 8th graders are the coolest and the most respected kids on campus. They relish and take full advantage of all privileges bestowed upon them as 8th graders. Naturally, I am perfectly prepared to over-stress about her grades because I want her to get into a top-tier high school – but I am not at all prepared for the other “stuff” that comes with being in the 8th grade.
My daughter is only 12 soon to be 13 in the 8th grade, but she looks and acts like her older classmates and friends. I can’t help her with her homework anymore. We both know that I’m not smarter than an 8th grader. So what is the other stuff? It’s the boy stuff; it’s the wearing of eyeliner and mascara; it’s the parties and “hanging out”. OMG – I’m going to die. I love that my daughter speaks openly to me about “cute boys”, Stars with killer abs, and “hot” booktubers.
I know she “shares” partly to gauge my reaction, but mainly to passively, yet aggressively, let me know that boys are interested in her and she is interested in them. As I listen, I’m dying inside because I never thought I would be that “share anything with me mom” although I’ve pretended to be her all of their lives.
