Staff What is dendrochronology Dendrochronology or tree-ring dating has been available as a recognized scientific technique since the early s. Simply stated, trees in temperate zones and some in tropical zones grow one visible ring per calendrical year. For the entire period of a tree’s life, a year-by-year record or ring pattern is formed that in some way reflects the climatic and environmental conditions in which the tree grew. These patterns can be compared and matched ring for ring with trees growing in the same geographical zone and under similar climatic conditions. Following these tree-ring patterns, the sum of which we refer to as chronologies, from living trees back through time, we can thus compare wood from old or ancient structures to our known chronologies, match the ring patterns a technique we call cross-dating , and determine precisely the age of the wood used by the ancient builder. This technique was pioneered by A. Douglass working in the American Southwest, and has since been applied in many areas of the world. Upon encountering a new site, the archaeologist immediately requires information about its age in order to set it in context with other sites. In research into our heritage the conservationist or architect may be able to date the general period of a building he is working with from either the situation, materials of construction, type of timber joints or other stylistic features. Almost certainly the century or portion of a century when it was built may be assigned with some certainty.
However, as more and more work is done and increasing numbers of structures with complex constructional phases are encountered, the general features may not be sufficient to give the accuracy in dating that is currently required. If research into other sources of information also fails to throw light on the building’s history, resort may be made to the various scientific methods of dating.

The Mystery Snow Brig Some years have now past since this unique and mysterious find, and no investigation is planned. If nothing is done soon, this ship may be wiped out by one of the many trawler fishers of the Baltic Sea. Despite bad visibility near the bottom, the crew got a spectacular sight on their TV monitors — an old ship standing upright with its two masts standing and bowsprit, perfectly intact.
The reason for sinking is a mystery, since both hull and rigging are intact. Snow brig The ship is 26 m long and the masts rise about 20 m, with perfectly-preserved tops platforms about halfway. The rigging is clearly a brig , with yard sails on both masts and a gaff sail behind the rear mast. In archaeology, the gradual changes in motifs were exploited systematically as a dating method by researchers from Montelius onwards. At least some objects belonging to such a typology should be datable by other criteria to fix a typology into a chronological framework. However, there are several problems. Canopy gaps were selected within seven pre-existing plots that were established as early as 25 years ago. Storm data was collected and overlaid on an aerial photo of the county to identify potential sources of gaps. Climate data temperature and precipitation was used to visually determine if years of suppression were due to climate rather than gap effects.
Release and suppression criteria were used to identify canopy gaps and the trees responses. Canopy gaps as recorded by ring-width release were compared to plant diversity data through time. Gaps were mainly created by one tree and were on average m2 in size.

Over the last few months I have been fortunate enough to have spent time with Dan and Martin on fieldwork in Wales taking core samples, so the invite to see the next part of the process could not be missed. Having found their lab, hidden in the Oxfordshire countryside, the experience I gained was invaluable in understanding how each sample is prepared, measured, and then compared against their extensive database to produce a date or date range. Meticulous attention to detail was needed at all times, as missing a single tree ring or taking an incorrect measurement could potentially produce an inaccurate result and throw the date out by years, if not centuries.
Dan and Martin gave a very interesting lecture, with examples of how dendrochronology works and where the technique has been used to provide a definite date where dates have been disputed. This was followed by fieldwork taking samples at The Long Gallery, Abingdon Abbey, which the students were to prepare, measure and analyse as part of their course.
